Davey
and Goliath: A Message of Love
Art
Clokey is a very idealistic person whom has always been focused
on making a difference in the world, especially for children.
This is reflected in his background, and it led to another famous
series, Davey and Goliath, produced for the Lutheran
Church from 1956 to 1973. Art and his production team did 65
15-minute shows, with half-hour specials on Christmas and Easter.
"I
went to a seminary in Connecticut for one year to become an
Episcopal minister," Art told us. "So I was that deeply involved
in the whole Christian business. And after one year at the seminary
I decided to go to Hollywood. I didn't want to become a minister
and be confronted with everybody's problems, 'cause I didn't
want to deal with that."
Art
wanted to create stories for children that communicated a message
of love, and this is very powerfully expressed in the Gumby
episodes. (There is a lot about Art's love for children in the
section on Gumby.) At the same time his background gave him
a deep respect for Christian values, and a deep understanding
of Christ's love for children. "I wanted to be with the children.
I wanted to get this message of love into film. After one year
of doing the Gumby films, we started producing the Davey
and Goliath series, and we actually had an opportunity to
make religious films with this message."
